We now offer self-guided trail running tours in the Dolomites on the Alta Via 1! Take the famous alta vias, or ‘high routes’ of the incredible Italian Dolomites in the northeastern corner of Italy. The Italian Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009, have been described by the explorer Reinhold Messner as “the most beautiful mountains in the world.” On this self-guided hut-to-hut runcation, or trail running/hiking adventure, you’ll discover some of the most beautiful trails and unique mountain huts in the world at your own pace. We’ll take care of all the logistics of baggage transport, mountain hut reservations, and provide you with a detailed itinerary and gpx mapping files to follow the route at your own pace and discretion. Along the way, you’ll end your days on the trail at scenic mountain huts, or rifugios, which offer warm lodges, scenic vistas, and fresh Italian cuisine and beverages. Our hut-to-hut adventure ensures that we'll be waking up and falling asleep to spectacular mountain sunrises and sunsets.

Trip Difficulty: Level 3 (click to learn more about trip difficulty levels).

  • We take care of all the logistics: route planning, every rifugio (mountain hut) booking, baggage transfer between huts, and a detailed trip packet with your itinerary, packing lists, mountain resources, and GPX map files. You run the Alta Via 1 at your own pace. Half board (breakfast and dinner) is included at the huts. What's not included: international airfare, lunches and snacks, alcoholic beverages, travel insurance, lodging or transport before/after the trip, and 24-hour on-trail assistance (that's what our guided Dolomites trip is for).

  • This is a Level 3 trip on a mountain route. You should be comfortable covering 7–15 miles per day with 2,000–6,000 feet of elevation gain and loss, at whatever running or run-hike pace suits you. It's open to ages 15 and up, any pace. An optional 12-week training plan from our running coach is available as an add-on.

  • The Alta Via 1 is the most famous of the Dolomites' "alta vie," or high routes — a stunning point-to-point traverse through the heart of the Italian Dolomites in northeastern Italy. You run from rifugio to rifugio across dramatic limestone peaks, alpine meadows, and high passes, ending each day at a mountain hut.

  • You'll stay in mountain huts (rifugios) in communal dormitory accommodation, with half board included — a cooked breakfast and dinner each day, often featuring Italian and South Tyrolean specialties (one even has a sauna). Rifugios are warm, welcoming mountain lodges with spectacular views; you can read more on our Mountain Hut Experience page.

  • Yes. You can request a custom self-guided Dolomites trip with a specific number of days on the trail, rest days, or a different style of accommodation (huts versus hotels in town). Email selfguided@runcation.org and we'll put together an itinerary that fits you.

  • You navigate using the interactive GPX files and detailed itinerary we provide, which show mileage and elevation for each day. You don't need to speak Italian, though a few words go a long way at the huts. This trip is best for runners confident navigating new trails and mountain weather on their own; if you'd prefer a guide and 24-hour on-trail support, see our guided Dolomites trips.

  • The self-guided Dolomites is bookable mid-June through mid-September, when the high route is clear and the rifugios are open.

  • The closest airport is Venice, Italy. Your trip packet includes detailed directions for reaching the start of the route from Venice by public transport, and for returning to Venice the same way at the end.

  • ou'll need a valid passport and travel insurance. The trip is in Italy (EU). For summer 2026, the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) is in effect, so allow extra time at the border for biometric registration; ETIAS authorization is expected later in 2026 and is not required for a summer 2026 trip. Check current U.S. government guidance for Europe before you travel.

This was a truly phenomenal experience. The Runcation team coordinated all of the lodging and bag transportation seamlessly, so the only thing we had to worry about was enjoying ourselves— which we did in droves!! They communicated everything extremely thoroughly beforehand and were immediately responsive whenever any questions arose.
