Leave Your Energy Gels Behind and Run Hut to Hut in the Italian Dolomites

Do you need to bring energy gels, gus, or sports nutrition bars while running hut to hut in the Italian Dolomites? We don’t think so. There is so much high quality and real Italian food along the route, from local cheeses and meats, wine and cappuccino, and incredible pastas and soups. Learn more about what it’s like to eat and run hut to hut in the Italian Dolomites!

Our very first Runcation was our hut to hut Dolomites tour, and the huts we’ve curated over the years are not your average huts. Leave your energy gels behind on this hut to hut trail running tour along a high route in the Italian Dolomites. There’s no shortage of cappuccino, beet and deer ravioli, local cheeses, spritz, insalata mista, vegetable soups, pastries, spaghetti, and even Prosecco cake.

Did you know the Hugo was invented in the Dolomites? This spritz can be sampled along our hut to hut trail running trip in the Dolomites.

One of our favorite stops along our hut to hut trail running route in the Italian Dolomites is a renovated dairy farm. They recently opened up a local cheese shop last year where you can sample all sorts of delicious local cheeses and meats. We combined this with an Italian spritz called the Hugo and shared this charcuterie board while soaking in the sun in the grass listening to cowbells after a day of running on the Alta Via 1.

Another favorite thing to try is the amazing variety of ravioli in the rifugios found in the Italian Dolomites. One of our favorites is local beetroot ravioli paired with local Italian wine. We stay in special rifugios with delicious food and amenities (there can be quite a variety between different mountain huts in the Dolomites) and it really feels like a vacation dining on these special dishes with mountain views from these rifugios.

An Italian cappuccino and pastry are the perfect mid-run fuel for long days in the mountains running the Italian Dolomites.

We tackle some impressive mileage and gain along the way (you can check out the elevation profiles on our website for details) and as you can see, are well-fueled along the way. For those that have been asking about self-guided, these special rifugios we visit are already sold out for most of July, but the good news is we still have spots secured on our guided tours. Join us July 11-17 or July 18-24, 2025!
