Slovenia Trails + How to Get Cheap Flights to Patagonia

Run of the Month

For an epic trail run from the base of Slovenia'a highest mountain to the seven lakes, check out this point-to-point trail run. The route features a mixture of highly technical trails and scrambles in the high karst plateaus underneath Triglav before descending into the forest. Rocky scrambles level off to smooth singletrack past lakes, fairytale cottages, wildflowers, and marmots.

From the mountain huts Dom Planika to Koca Pri Triglavskih Jezerih is about 10 km with a little over 1,000 feet of elevation gain and over 3,000 feet of descent. Check out the FATMAP gpx route and elevation profile of the route and the link below for more info on our Slovenia Runcation in July 2020.

Travel Tip: How to Get Cheap Flights to Patagonia

Flights to Patagonia are notoriously expensive, but we'd like to share some tips we've discovered about finding cheap airfare to Patagonia.

1) Search for flights on different websites. Try the airline's website as well as aggregate websites that mix and match flight itineraries from different airlines. We personally love Skyscanner.

2) Fly round-trip to a major International airport, and then buy domestic flights separately. For example, we've often found cheap airfare from major United States cities to Buenos Aires, Argentina, as well as cheap domestic flights from Buenos Aires to the hub of our Patagonia Runcation, El Calafate Airport. Purchasing separately might save you some time, and money.

3) Look for flights to nearby airports. Depending on the dates of travel, international flights to Patagonia can vary dramatically based on whether you're flying into the Chilean or Argentinian side. Sometimes flights into Chilean Patagonia happen to be cheaper, but the good news is that Argentinian Patagonia is just a short transfer away. For example, to reach our start in El Calafate, Argentina, you can look for international flights into Puerto Natales, Chile, which is just a few hours away by bus from El Calafate or El Chalten, Argentina.

Adventure

Our featured adventure this week takes us off the beaten path in El Chalten, Argentina to a Private Nature Reserve in Patagonia in Los Glaciares National Park. Over 6,000 hectares have been converted from cattle grazing area to a Mountain Reserve of protected wild land. On our Patagonia Runcation, we spend two nights at this Private Nature Reserve to explore trails out the front door that tend to see less crowds than the traditional tours around El Chalten.
