Why Spain's Costa Blanca is the Best Winter Runcation Destination
Why Spain's Costa Blanca is the Best Winter Trail Running Retreat Destination
There are several reasons we think Spain's Costa Blanca is the best winter destination for a trail running running retreat. Between uncrowded trails, perfect temperatures, Spanish culture, and both the mountains and the coast, Spain is at the top of our list.
The moderate mediterranean climate makes Spain's coast a perfect running destination. Typically cool, crisp temps in the mornings and evenings sandwich a warm winter sun in the day. With average temperatures in the area ranging from the 50s-70s and scarce amounts of rain (Costa Blanca averages 300 sunny days a year!), the weather is perfect for getting a run in and getting in a side activity afterwards.
We think the trails of the Costa Blanca are a hidden gem for trail runners. With most of the mountains in Europe covered in snow in January, you can still get in quality mountain running in the Costa Blanca. There are several spectacular peaks in the region overlooking the coast, with the highest being 5,000 feet above sea level. Between country roads and technical trails with rocky ridgelines, there's truly something for all runners. While also paradise for hikers, cyclists, and climbers, this region is a budding trail running destination. In fact, the 2018 Trail World Championships is being hosted this weekend in neighboring Penyagolosa! Check out I Run Far's coverage of the event this year.
From tapas to wine, Spain is a foodie's dream. Enjoy the unique gastronomy of the Costa Blanca mediterranean region, sample traditional paella, and enjoy fresh and affordable local food from the markets.
New Year's Eve Spanish Style
You won't want to miss out on a Spanish New Year's Eve celebration. If you haven't partaken in Spain's 12 grapes on New Year's tradition or sampled cava, a white Spanish sparkling wine, you won't want to miss out. We love NPR's coverage of this awesome holiday, and the fact that you can celebrate it from the comfort of a villa, or a night on the town.
Spanish Culture and Side Activities
From sea kayaking the coastal caves of Denia to exploring the wine region of Alicante in the nearby Jalon valley, this area has an abundance of side activities. Learn more about the history and culture of the Costa Blanca by discovering Moorish monuments in the region and the 100 castles of the Costa Blanca, or hike up to thousands of year old rock paintings. You can check out Costa Blanca tourism page for more info.
Winter travel to Spain is incredibly affordable. Find discounted flights to Alicante, or fly into nearby Barcelona and either spend a few days exploring, or take the train or a quick flight to Alicante! At the time of this posting, we found round-trip international flights to Spain from San Francisco for $387 on Norweigan Air! We recommend checking out Skyscanner for the latest flight deals to Spain.
